Web Sites That Are Compatible With HIS

What are examples of compatible Web sites?

A Web site is said to be compatible with HIS when it uses one of the Harvest Information System code sets as a means for indexing and retrieving information. The Harvest Information System maintains a registry of compatible Web sites. Thus far, sites compatible with the following code sets have been registered:

Follow one of these links to see a complete list of sites compatible with that code set and to test information retrieval by means of code values.

What exactly makes a Web site compatible?

A Web site that is compatible with the Harvest Information System has two properties:

  • Information displayed on the site has been indexed according to at least one code set from a HIS registry.
  • The information about a particular entity in the domain of the code set may be retrieved through a Web browser by incorporating the code for the entity into a URL.

For instance, consider a site that uses the three-letter codes for language from ROL_Language and thus meets the first criterion. The three-letter code for Fijian is FJI. If a user can retrieve information about the Fijian language through a URL that contains the string FJI, then the Web site is compatible with HIS. For instance,

http://www.domain.org/dynamicPage.asp?code=FJI
http://www.domain.org/languages/FJI/overview.htm

On the other hand, even if a page contains the code FJI within its body, the site is not compatible if the URL does not contain the code. For instance, URLs like the following are not compatible:

http://www.domain.org/dynamicPage.asp?key=2537
http://www.domain.org/languages/Fijian.htm

How do we register a compatible Web site?

Any one who knows of a Web site that meets the criteria described above may submit it for registration using the form below. Register once for each code set that the site is compatible with. On receiving the registration information, the HIS registrar will review the site to ensure that it meets the criteria. Another consideration will be the breadth of coverage; for instance, a site that supports only a few codes out of a large code set will probably not be listed. If the site meets the criteria for inclusion, it will be added to the list of compatible sites published on this site. Supply your name and email address in the form, if you would like the registrar to notify you of the outcome.

How can we indicate our support of HIS code sets?
